A great idea can go a long way! ~Whitney

From www.RedStickBlog.com

We are embarking on a new project and we’d like for you to help. Back on January 6th, “King’s Day,” we asked our facebook fans to share their favorite place to get a king cake in Baton Rouge. The answers were so varied that we took the conversation to Twitter seeking a majority.

There we began a conversation with @lynseydesign, a Twitter follower who was also seeking the best of the best. She even put together a map based on tweeted suggestions: http://bit.ly/hwqgxt! Since then we’ve been mulling the idea of a taste-off of sorts, but we don’t have the luxury of being able to afford adding an extra 5lbs this winter. Enter Twitter friend @wbreaux with the suggestion of a competition to @VisitBatonRouge @biteandbooze and @lynseydesign.

And the competition was born. We’re hammering out the details, but here’s what we can tell you. Within the next three weeks, Visit Baton Rouge is partnering with Jay Ducote’s Bite and Booze Blog to bring you the first “official” Baton Rouge King Cake taste off.

We are relying on our fans, friends and followers to provide us with the competitors. So far, we have Ambrosia, Baum’s, Calandro’s, Albertson’s, Oak Point Fresh Market, Gambino’s, Port Allen Bakery, Thee Heavenly Donut, Ralph’s, Matherne’s and Forte Grove.

To level the playing field, all submissions will be the same flavor, we’re thinking a simple cream cheese or praline filling. And we have a few spots to fill on the judging panel. If you are interested in being a judge, please reply to this post with the attributes that would qualify you! We’re looking for foodies, local celebs and a couple of average joes that enjoy their King Cake.

We have also added a non-traditional king cake category. This could range from Community Coffe’s Carnivale Cake flavored coffee to ice cream to cupcakes and cake balls.

Oh, and we’re still seeking a fun name for the competition! Reply below with your suggestions! Or post on our facebook wall or simply tweet us @VisitBatonRouge and please tag taste off tweets with #KingCakeBR!

Taking a Look Back at PR in 2010 - The Good, Bad & Ugly

It can take a few days to really understand and reflect on all the great PR stories of 2010. Some of these stories have down right changed the way PR professionals do our job. Communicating with the media has fundamentally changed in the way in which we pitch news stories. Not to mention, in some cases a PR story can go directly into the hands of the consumer without being seen on the 5 p.m. news.
In all, five PR stories stand out in my mind from 2010:

The Good.
1. Shoutout to Facebook. Here's what happens when a great product gets a good solid PR plan in place. Not only does your product hit 500 million users (likely the most cited/well-known statistic of 2010), but your founder and CEO becomes Time Magazine's "Person of the Year."

2. Oh when the Saints go marching in. Big congratulations to the Saints and their management on a successful run at the Super Bowl in early 2010. The spirit of New Orleans and their team was shown to the world through a 90-minute football game. The positive media coverage almost surpassed the number mentions of Hurricane Katrina.
The Bad.
3. Cecil says show me the $$! It was rather difficult, as a college football fan, to watch an extremely talented player endure the onslaught of media coverage following the news that his father put him up for sale. Heisman trophy winner, for at least the next few months, Cam Newton could be one of the best college players of all-time, but his name will always be followed with "whose Dad wanted $120k for his son to play football." Cam will need his own PR team ahead of the NFL draft to do some much needed image repair. To credit Auburn University though, they did a pretty good job of keeping the media straight that Cam was "not involved."

The Ugly.
4. Tiger Woods fails on the golf course and in the press conference. I followed this story from wrecked Cadillac Escalade to Elin's tell all in People Magazine. I won't deny it; I spent 2010 transfixed on this story. Admittedly, I was fascinated with how such a well disciplined golf player could let their personal slice into pieces. Then again, Tiger may fit the profile of a socio-path. At the end of the day, we learned that while your client may think silence and being nonresponsive to the media will make it "go away," in the world of a 24/7 news cycle it most certainly will not!

5. BP oil spill. Not only did 11 people loose their lives, a fact that many failed to report, but BP never gained control of the story. They refused to use social media until @BPOilSpill was finished ruining their brand on Twitter. For any company with a crisis communication plan, please be sure that social media is a part of it NOW!

Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc. Right now, all are still in the innovator and early adopter phases. It remains to be seen if they will achieve mainstream status. One thing is certain, location based social media platforms offer businesses the best chance at measuring their precious ROI in a dollar amount.

Content clutter. In today's online world "everyone can be a publisher of content!" The interesting trend to watch however will be, "whether or not the number of people publishing content will decrease to a small confined group?" With so much information all over the internet it can be difficult for an unknowing consumer to judge the quality of content posted on a website, blog, etc. Will the top media dogs such as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox find a way to rule in the online market? We'll see.

Social Media Optimization. Since the dawn of search engines SEO has reigned supreme. But now with strong partnerships between Bing and Facebook and the growing use of social media influences in search, social media optimization will slowly take over.

These are trends that I'm watching, would love to hear what your watching for in the world of social media?

Follow Whitney Breaux on Twitter @wbreaux or on Facebook . We knew a new change would come soon. Over the course of history, no political party has truly held onto power for any significant length of time. That is because voters never like too much of something when they have it. They are always looking for something else. This is especially heightened when you consider the economic climate in America right now. Voters are looking for someone to blame. And with Republicans help with a great messaging campaign, they helped voters place blame on Obama and the democrats.

So why is it that Republicans taking the house will likely provide President Obama with his best shot at reelection?

Two things are important to point out. By having a Republican controlled House, Obama will finally have to learn to govern from the center. This means working with Republicans to solve Americas problems as oppose to telling them to ride "in the back of the bus." But the hit-or-miss mark for Obama and his communications staff will come from whether or not they can spin his work with Republicans into messaging that proclaims Obama as a populist and bipartisan President. For example, see President Clinton post 1994 mid-term elections.

Finally, while it is not likely that Republicans can demand and pass their agenda through the Senate and over the President's pen, they too must watch out for the "Tides of Consent." Just has the country (or at least most of it) rallied behind Obama's rally cry in 2008, Republicans too could fall prey to voters looking for a change away from their agenda in 2012.

Continue the conversation about the mid-term elections with me on Twitter , Facebook or LinkedIn !

Thought of the Day "Leave Your Foot in the Door"

About a month ago, I listened to a great keynote address by political analyst Donna Brazile at the 2010 Louisiana Women's Conference. I served as a presenter at the conference on "Social Media in Business."

Over the last few days one of Donna's quotes in particular has stuck with me:

"When you fight your way into the board room, leave your foot in the door for someone else to come behind you."

On its surface you could stop and think, "why would I want to make the road easier for someone else to come behind me?" When you sit and think on the quote it hits you. We have all achieved life successes because someone else has paved a road for us to follow. Someone was thoughtful enough to leave their foot in the door to help pull us up into the ranks of our profession.

As you go about your day think to yourself, "have I left my foot in the door for someone to come behind me?" Otherwise, have you really left a legacy for others to follow.

Follow me on Twitter @wbreaux or on Facebook http://facebook.com/whitneybreaux.

"People Spread Awesome!" People will RT (retweet), share, reply, forward, etc. content that they find awesome!

"Blog about what you are passionate about." Life is so short. Why waist your time blogging about topics you really do not care about? It shows up in your writing when you are speaking about a topic that you are not passionate about. If you don't have anything to say for a few days or weeks, it's ok. Wait until something inspires you and then blog about it. Oh and a few other pointers, turn on mobile for your blog and blog/write first, think about SEO later.

"Social media does NOT make something successful." I have preached this to students @LSU and business leaders, @unmarketing reiterates, "if your product sucks social media is only going to amplify how much it sucks!"However, I would insert that social media can help you identify ways to improve your product as long as it doesn't suck too much!

"Every time someone asks about the ROI of Twitter a kitten dies." The ROI debate will go on as long as the recession holds in the US. Companies are having to justify every purchase and decision with how it returns a profit or causes a debt. The mere fact that social media can improve customer relationships, increase brand loyalty and boost engagement will not move some executives. We are starting to see the turn thought as Facebook and Twitter continue to develop insights and other features to show some level of metric and measurement.

"Let them hate as long as they fear you." Negative comments and distracting posts are bound to happen no matter how big or small your social media presence. It's quite frankly human nature for people to complain and social media gives them the feeling that someone is listening. While some negative folks will always be themselves and you cannot change them, there are a few out there that with credible information and an earnest response can generate future positive relationships.

Follow Whitney Breaux on Twitter @wbreaux or on Facebook . Or better yet, how do you use a library catalog to locate a book? The best part of being forced to learn these tools as a child is I no longer have to use them! Thank you Google, Yahoo, Bing, and ever other search engine out there.

As I've mentioned before our "instant gratification society" wants news, information, resources, etc. with a few keywords and the click of a button. The same applies for when a consumer is looking for more information about your business/brand. Your website is the front office! But the consumer may want to hang out with you at the bar across the street = social media.

1. Facebook. Populate your business/brand information throughout the fan page. Try not to get too excited that you are now engaging with your audience that you forget others will have to find you too. Use the open text box under the fan page avatar and provide a short applicable description of your business/brand. Also do not take for granted the "Info" tab on the fan page. Put all your information in and as your page grows in information and activity so to will your search engine results.

2. Twitter. Your name and your twitter handle no longer have to be the same name. In theory, you would like your twitter handle to be short in order to maximize the 140 characters you have to convey a message. But you still want users to know your full name, website and more information about you. For example, if you are the United Bowling League of America your full name would be "your name" on twitter and your handle could be @BowlUS. Also, populate the "bio" section of your Twitter page with keywords and phrase that best describe your business/brand. You only have 160 characters so use your words wisely!

3. Publish your social media account information on your website home page. Facebook search is pretty accurate, but Twitter and other social networking sites are still perfecting their search tools. Make it easy for the consumer to find you on social sites by putting your account information where they can find you easiest!

So there you have it! Go and populate the world... with your content!

Follow me on Twitter @wbreaux (Your Name: Whitney Breaux ) and on Facebook . Let's connect on LinkedIn !

It's Decision Time for Les Miles and the 2010 LSU Football Team

Picture from www.Tigerdroppings.com by user jwall3.

I am arguably the biggest LSU Football fan this side of the Mississippi! Ok, so I'm sure I would be challenged on that front, but I am a huge LSU Football fan. Since the 2000 season and the emergence of my favorite (hottest) football coach Nick Saban, I have faithfully followed the LSU Tigers. I'll admit, when Nick said he was leaving for Miami I cried. Sad day...

Fast forward Monday, October 2005. After experiencing the worst hurricane/natural disaster in our countries history as a young freshman, I entered LSU's Tiger Stadium to take my place not only an LSU Football fan, but now as a student! Teachers canceled classes and tailgating traditions were altered to fit a Monday Night in Tiger Stadium. It would also be Les Miles's first game in Tiger Stadium. Les and I were the true freshman that night. He learned a tough lesson that in the SEC you go for jugular every down and I learned that my favorite Tigers would lose every now and then.

Fast forward to 2010. After a successful run and win at the 2007 BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans, Louisiana (I was there), we have arrived at the crossroad, intersection, diversion canal, whatever you would like to call it but it is DECISION TIME. After numerous errors, time clock management issues and failure to ignite the most talented offense in the country, this weekend will determine the future of LSU Football under Les Miles. Rumors are swirling that Les is done anyway after this season and the alumni have raised the funds necessary to sever his contract. Whether this is true or not, the LSU vs. Florida game will either provide LSU the platform to emerge as a team that's just been struggling to put it all together or a weak team with even weaker leaders.

Florida will come out for blood after their disappointing performance in Bear Bryant Stadium and unfortunately our Tigers will be on the receiving end of their frustration. All I can do is strongly advise Coach Miles to let the quarterback call the plays (these kids are talented let them play ball) and somebody put the biggest fricking clock in the world on the LSU sideline and have it synced to the stadium time clock.

Or better yet, I like the idea of Les Miles's new Asst. Coach!

Social media morals and ethics, do they exist?

Rutgers student Tyler Clementi jumped off the GW bridge after being exploited online.

I recently read a fabulous article by Austin Gaddis, a sophomore majoring in public relations and communication studies at the University of Alabama, entitled “Social media addicts.” http://www.cw.ua.edu/2010/10/08/social-media-addicts/

His article cited how social media has transformed the way we communicate and I could not agree more. Recent surveys have shown that Internet users spend more time on Facebook than they do on any other website on the web. With 500 million users that’s an incredible statistic. While Twitter and location based social media platforms are still on the up swing, the mere fact that they are featured at the close of every major advertising commercial these days demonstrates their mainstay.

But in turn we as a social media industry must look to each other and question, where are we headed? In recent days the deaths of teenagers and college students who have been bullied via online networks is a scary fact. How can we as a community help drive a since of ethical behavior online?

My question is “how can we stop playground bullying, murder, crime, etc?” The only answer I can think of is education and parenting. These are societal issues that exists even offline. So are these kids just the victim of the next breed of criminals? Those who exist online? I certainly hope not.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; At the Louisiana State University (@lsu ), the Journalism college offers a wide range of concentrations including Political Communication (my degree program), Print Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations. The student I addressed are at the beginning of their long journey through the Manship School of Mass Communication . However, their enlightened professor Roxanne Dill recognized that social media will play a direct role in the future careers of her young students. I could not agree more.

The fact is every facet of the communications world now requires (or at least highly recommends) a social media component. I told the students "why we communicate as not changed!" Instead, "how we communicate has changed!" By the time the graduating class of 2013/2014 enters into the communications job market, social media will be in full onslaught swing.

Most, if not all, journalist will tease their next day print story with tweets about their investigations. In turn, after the story hits news stands they will use Facebook and blogs to tell the rest of the story that didn't get past the copy editors desk. Print journalist may use a small video camera to capture clips of their story research and build video clips that can be published online.

During one of my talks with students, I held up the LSU Daily Reveille, a student publication. On the front page was a story about the resurgence of New Orleans street bands and music. I explained...

"Now hear is a great story for print. It talks about something that is very important to the people of Louisiana and New Orleans, music. Now imagine if the same camera that took this great photo, also recorded video clips of the same band playing on the street corner. Let's say in the story conclusion, the reporter directs the reader to the LSUReveille.com website and there the reader can download iTunes clips from the artists and view a video of them performing. Now instead of just being a print journalist, I've added value to the newspaper website and increased interest in my story."

Of course, college is the perfect time to experiment with what's right and what's wrong, but that's just the first step. I encouraged the students to think beyond the boundaries of their particular field. Facts suggest, almost 200,000 students graduate each year with a degree in communications. My wish for LSU graduates is that they know how to "add value" to their particular field by being innovative and versatile!

Here is a recap from the Manship School of Mass Communication website, Dill and Whitney Breaux Team Up for Social Media.

I might be speaking to more students about social media in the near future, what would you recommend I advise them to do?

"The Social Network" Changes Lives

I just committed the ultimate Louisiana sin. I intentionally missed New Orleans Saints game and escorted myself to the local movie theatre to see the latest movie craze "The Social Network!"

"The Social Network" traces the history of everyone's favorite website Facebook.com. It details the turbulent start up of the now emphasis website that has changed the way we communicate forever. One could spend an entire post outlining what happened in the movie, more importantly is the reaction I had to the number 1 movie of the weekend.

In one word, INSPIRED. Not inspired that I may beat Mark Zucherburg to being the youngest billionare ever (I have two years left), but convinced that great are started around the world everyday. We are all one day away from the biggest idea, moment and action of our lives. Hardwork, late nights and determination will get you across the finish line.

In another sense the movie reaffirmed my belief that Facebook.com is here to stay. Just as the telephone helped change the use of letter-writing, 500 million users from around the country now use Facebook.com more and longer than any other site on the internet. Every business has a place on Facebook. 8 out of 10 a member of your target audience is on Facebook. Now how you find them, talk with them and build a relationship is the another piece of the pie.

Have you seen "The Social Network?" recently asked me, “What’s the difference between Twitter posts and Facebook posts?” The first key difference is I could not respond to that question in 140 characters or less, thus a blog post was necessary.

Note: this post is based on my experiences both professionally and personally with Facebook and Twitter.

Facebook

Facebook is the most inclusive social media platform I have experienced. From video and photo sharing capabilities to direct communication with consumers, Facebook does it all (except, location… yet!) A Facebook post serves as a means to communicate new information and generate customer conversation. Most people check their Facebook news feed. Posts that catch their eye or spark an interest usually can draw attention and interaction. I use the rule of limiting Facebook posts to important information, specials, current events and others that I deem appropriate. Facebook posts should be limited to 2-5 posts per day depending on the interest level in your topic, fan page, group, etc. Too many posts on Facebook from one account is like cluttering someone inbox. And let’s be honest Facebook is probably the next task on the to-do list after checking email. (you know it’s true even if you don’t want to admit it!) However, with Facebook you can jazz up your posts by instantly adding links, video, pictures. While you can do these on Twitter as well, on Facebook the presentation and appeal is much cleaner and attractive!

Twitter

If your home page to your website is the front of your business/personal office, then Twitter is bar across the street that you hang out at after work. Welcome to the world of non-stop communication and conversation in a comfortable atmosphere. In Twitter, like Facebook, you have the power to listen to who you like and shut off whoever talks too much. Unlike Facebook, however, talking too much usually does not hurt you or grant you the dreaded “unfollow!” With Twitter you have 140 characters to effectively communicate information to your list of followers. This helps you get your message across quickly. The goal of a Twitter post is to provide relevant and interesting information to those who follow you. If you are a Chef, talk about a new ingredient or dish you are preparing. Usually, your followers will be culinary enthusiasts wanting to learn more from you. That’s just one example though. Everyone has their niche. Find you audience and speak to them. Just remember in Twitter it is an ongoing news source of information you’ve asked for by following certain people. With the news you receive, you should share with others and make comments. With the news you provide, you should respond to comments and encourage others to share.

What would you add to Facebook vs. Twitter?

An Open Letter to CEOs and Management from a Millennial!

Dear Business CEO, VP, HR, (whoever else deems themselves mid and upper level management!),

Hello from the Millennial generation. Hope this letter finds you doing well. For some of us we are very excited to be entering the workplace and look forward to learning a lot from you.

With that out of the way her are a few things some of us 20-somethings have been talking about lately.

About three weeks ago I met Maggie Richardson at a Baton Rouge Social Media Club meeting. She politely came up to me and introduced herself saying "I'm here to meet you." We briefly discussed her upcoming article about examining the the generational gaps in the workplace. I was very excited to see Baton Rouge Business Report take on such a timely topic.

In the article, out on newsstands today, I mentioned “Our generation is the one where no one really gave us the box to fit in; they just said build the box in a different way." Think about. Millennials were not given a typewriter and told "learn to type 60 words a minute!" Instead, we were given a computer and told to develop creative presentations and flashy images. The one factor I find that separates Millennials from any other is the influence and stressed importance of the arts and creativity in our education. From music to art and a world wide web, we learned that fitting into a box would not meet our serious attention deficit needs. Thinking back on it, I begin to feel claustrophobic at the mere thought of my self expression, creativity and wit being constrained by an authoritative figure.

I shared with Ms. Richardson a situation that many newcomers to the workplace experience early on. "This is the way we've always done it, so we'll keep doing it this way." This attitude that is carried in many workplaces, in my opinion, is a sign that change and the thought of a better and newer way of accomplishing a goal is scary. I've found that this attitude can prevent an organization from staying relevant in today's society and stifles their own growth.

With every generation comes its high points and low points. My uneducated sociology opinion would suggest that every generation, even you, once held a sense of optimism and youthfulness. We were all young once! The difference, at least at this point, is Millennials have not conceded to the box that some have put before us. Instead we attempt to find new ways to shape the box or work around it. No only means "find another way."

While I truly believe other generations have built their philosophies based on their experiences, I contend that their experiences do not have to shape the future and philosophies of the Millennial generation. I believe Millennial have the passion, drive and motivation to press forward and reshape the workplace as we know it today.

Tomorrow's consumer is today's Millennial. The fact that we grew up with a computer in our bedroom and Google giving us instant results should serve as a hint into how we will work, live and play. To some it up, we multi task without great ease.

My biggest advice to any CEO or mid-level manager working with Millennials in the workplace today, "take us seriously. We have the knowledge that your organization needs to succeed. We are not here to replace you. Most of us honestly have great ideas and opinions that may not have thought of and will take you very far. Just because it has not been done before does not mean it can not be done."

Sincerely,

A Millennial.

Learn more about the generation gap in the workplace in Richardson's cover story in the June 29th issue of Baton Rouge Business Report "Here Come Millennials!"

@wbreaux
@brsocme
Friend me on Facebook
Check out my website

What are some of your experiences working with Millennials? In its purist form, PR can assist an organization in managing and controlling its perception. PR can effectively put out a burning fire caused by a bad reputation. I find PR also utilizes the mass media more than #SocialMedia to convey messaging and build awareness. I love Public Relations and all that it stands for, but SocialMedia is a totally different horse that requires a different set of skills.

SocialMedia is truly an art form that requires a delicate dance of conversation and interaction to initiate true two way communication directly with a target audience. In a matter of seconds, a message can be sent out to thousands of followers, friends and fans and you can instantly receive a response. SocialMedia allows an organization to build a “real” relationship with its audience based on trust, factual information and the notion that someone is always willing to listen (at least when done correctly).

I believe PR is similar to your front office of your company. You want to put on your best presentation; the office should be will kept and a few plants here and there to enhance the environment. But, social media is CHILLAXED, back room, bar simulating conversation that’s comfortable and generally not formal.

So if you ask me (which maybe you didn’t) there is a strong difference between PR and SocialMedia. Can PR practitioners effectively use SocialMedia? Absolutely, some can. But it should NEVER be assumed that a PR practitioner is inherently also a SocialMedia strategist.

Do you think PR and Social Media are complimentary and competitors?

Will Social Media Fade Away? I Wouldn't Bet On It!

Is your head officially spinning with all the different social media platforms out there? From Postherous, Tumblr, FriendFeed and so much more. Everyday a new social media platform is launched in a college dorm room or brain think tank around the country. One thing history has taught us is although the initial surge of excitement around a platform can be overwhelming, eventually all falls into place.

I'll admit, prior to MySpace.com I remember HighSchoolClub.com. HSC was my first venture into social media in 2003. HSC had IM, page profiles and search abilities for to find people who attend your school or other high schools across the platform. But with most things HSC faded out of site as my generation entered college and thus the world of Facebook!

Facebook entered (and took over my life) at the beginning of Summer 2005. It was the latest hit (and biggest) to take over colleges across the country. At that time, only those with college .edu email address were able to access the platform. I can vividly remember the anticipation of getting back to the dorm room to see if someone added me as a friend, messaged me or the holy grail ... "poke me!" Oh and do you remember http://www.thefacebook.com/! If you can relate, you are a true Facebook early adapter. lol

The Facebook I knew is no longer. It's one of the most used social media platforms today. Changes are made daily to introduce new users every day. Are you a fan? Not any more you are a "liker!" lol

But the question that still circulates in circles, is "will social media platforms stick around or is this just another fad/phase?" One thing is for sure, social media is NOT to be underestimated. If you think about it forms of social media have existed for a long time. The telephone began the first interaction through a medium other than paper. Fax machines allowed opinionated columnist and others to widely spread a message (and receive feedback). The ability to see a message and respond to it stretches in further back to the courier days. The only difference... today the response time is much much shorter.

I would argue the primary reason social media will last, is that every platform will find its niche audience and will focus on that audience. Case in point, MySpace.com. I have long since deleted my MySpace page after I couldn't the random backgrounds and insanely annoying music. MySpace has successfully found its niche audience, music lovers! I'm glad to see MySpace settling into its role in the social media role. MySpace is a great place to listen to new music from your favorite artists and see a behind-the-scenes look into their world.

So "will social media fade away?" I wouldn't suggest you bet your life on it. Social media will evolve just like everything in our society.

What's next... I have no clue, but like many social media enthusiast, I'll keep my eyes open.

Would you agree?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whitneybreaux.blogspot.com/2010/04/will-social-media-fade-away-i-wouldnt.html' title='Will Social Media Fade Away? I attended East Baton Rouge Parish Schools for elementary, middle and high school. I then went on to bleed purple and gold at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Throughout this time when others were negative and slammed the BR (a/k/a Big Raggedy... and more) I attempted to uplift a city with soo much potential. Think about! Baton Rouge gave us Raising Canes (ohhh, i love the sauce), we're the International home of tailgating (thanks to SU and LSU) and when tragedy strikes this city comes together.

Now more than ever is the perfect opportunity for Baton Rouge residents to stand up and GO BR or be #BatonRougeProud! I look around me and remember a city that didn't have a downtown anything. In my hayday Citiplace and College Drive were consider downtown. I see the diversity, development and determination in the eyes of our leadership and say "WOW, we are headed in the right direction." I am so proud to be a resident (and now taxpayer) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

@VisitBatonRouge

When I interviewed at VisitBatonRouge.com, I told my soon-to-be boss "Baton Rouge has given me alot. The goal was to increase the discussion of the city I love in the "blogosphere" and in #SocialMedia!

Why Me?

Instead of waiting for someone else to take the time to build the organization, I did it at my desk one morning and ran with it. It was important to me that social media users and professionals in Baton Rouge have the opportunity to meet, network and continue their development and education into the ever-changing world of social media. I wouldn't accept no for an answer. I may not have the most Twitter followers and my blog may be a newborn (*note: I've been on Facebook since 2005!), but I have the passion and heart (and time) to make #BRSocMe happen.

Where #BRSocMe is Headed?

Today, #BRSocMe is comprised of 140 members and growing. I am honored to serve this organization with five Board Members who share my enthusiasm and passion for BatonRouge Stephanie Sander (@stephsandy), Jay Ducote (@biteandbooze), James Fox-Smith (@countryroadsmag), Shannon Lane (@Cajun_Mama) and Lisa Stansberry (@louisianafoodie). We are determined to see Baton Rouge truly establish itself as the "Creative Capital of the South."

Our first full club meeting is April 29, 2010 at the Louisiana State Museum. Lunch is being provided FREE of charge by JimmyJohn's. While http://www.twitter.com/wbreaux grew up in a time where cell phones were cool if you had a flip phone and snake was the game everyone was trying to win, these days the harassment endured by teens is scary. I remember being in and out of the cool crowd and even what it felt like to bully and harass someone else. Some people pass it off as a phase, and maybe in 2004 it was just a phase. But these days the harassment extends beyond the boundaries of in your face or at school tormenting. Imagine it going on 24/7.

I applaud the Louisiana Legislature for taking a step on this issue that has attracted much national recognition lately.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/20/cyberbullying-bill-advanc_n_544937.html

#SoFresh STL Wrap Up by @wbreaux

Now it's time to say goodbye to all your friends, well twitter followers at least.

Social Fresh 2010 in St. Louis was a wild success in my opinion. Yet, another opportunity to meet up with like minded people and discuss the ever-changing world of social media. Although I'm not a graduate from an Ivy League school on the east coast and no I don't operate a mutli-million dollar start up in Silicon Valley, my GRITS (Girl Rasied in the South) attitude proved well.

I would liken my experience at Social Fresh to my brain being put through a series of rat mazes and finished off with a grueling training session on the hamster wheel. Social Fresh successfully stuffed thousands of hours of research, study and practice into less than 12 hours. From corporate blogging to SEO comprehension and back round again to social media marketing.

I did win a free set of Griffin earphones by racing to the front of the room. But very few do it well. Personally, Baton Rouge is doing a heck of a job but I'm more than slightly bias.

I opted to stay out of the downtown area of St. Louis, where the #SoFresh conference was being held, during my stay and hang out in a cool, hip and cultured side of town known as the Delmar Loop. Recently designated as "One of the 10 Great Streets in America" by American Planning Association, the Delmar Loop area entertains a wide spectrum of people. With 140 speciality shops, including 48 resturats, 10 art galleries, 25 clothing boutiques and much more, the area is buzzing with energy and excitement 24/7.

Instead of walking the street like a lonely tourist, grabbing a bike from Big Shark proved to be the optium way to view the entire area in a really cool way. Honestly, my biking skills have suffered because of my excessive spinning for exercise so I'm sure the Delmar Loop faithfuls found it funny to watch me ride up and down the Blvd.

Some things of special note:

The St. Louis Walk of Fame: All along the sidewalk in the Delmar Loop are informative plaques that highlight the lives and times of people who are from St. Louis or those who have had a significant impact on the city of St. Louis. Some plaques that caught my eye include Chuck Berry, who apparently still plays at the Blueberry Hill at least once a month, Bob Petit, a graduate of my high school Baton Rouge High and Louisiana State University and my St. Louis fav Nelly! So much for the #sofresh pre-party. But these are the life and times of a Mom, MBA student, communications specialist and social media junkie!

Highlights of the day:
1. Finding out about the MetroLink. After seeing this I am determined to build a rail transportation system for Baton Rouge. To see people of all colors, creeds and socio-economic classes was a truly humbling experience. If it's done here it can be done in Baton Rouge!

2. The Gateway Arch. Walking up to this monumental structure that use see growing up was amazing. It's an obvious stop on any trip to St. Louis.

3. Getting completely lost looking for a BBQ restaurant in downtown St. Louis. I don't know what I was thinking, but I had this thought that St. Louis BBQ was on my agenda. Special thanks to @STLconciergeGuy for the recommendation in downtown @SmokingJoesBBQ is on the list for tomorrow. SHHH know one tell my trainer!

Here's to a good nights sleep and an early morning workout and then heading out to http://www.socialfresh.com/!

WB

St. Louis Arch "Gateway to the West"

What an incredible way to really kick off my brief stay in St. Louis. The St. Louis Arch is a staple in the minds and hearts of people across the world. The arch sits on the edge of the Mississippi River at the intersection of Missouri and Illinois.

After a 10min ride from the hotel to the Arch Landing terminal of the Metro Link, the St. Louis Arch was in sight. Instead of taking the street route, the riverfront walk provided a more scenic approach to the arch. Here the banks of the Mississippi have no levee. Children are able to play in the "sand" right at the river’s edge. It's crazy to think right on the other side of the river is an entirely different state.

Once you realize where you are and where you are headed, you stumble across a mountain of steps that lead to the base of the St. Louis Arch. The entrance is similar to an airport at least when it comes to security checks. A stop at the ticket counter can grant you access to the top of the arch. ($10 for adults; $5 for children; although I got a $3 discount because it's National Park Week! Here's another hint: if you sign up for the Arch e-newsletter you can earn a free one-hour cruise ride along the Mississippi River. I wasn't able to make it but thought I'd share it with you.)

There can be a little wait in the line for the tram that takes you to the top of the arch, but I was a single passenger rider so I went right in. You're stuffed into a tram car with four other people (that's why some people wait in order to ride with family) for a ten minute ride to the top! The ride was a bit scary at points because you have no clue if this little white car is going to safely deliver you to the top.

The top of the St. Louis Arch was honestly a bit disappointing. Not sure exactly what I expected maybe glass floors and ceiling to floor windows, but instead the top is a series of small rectangle windows that you can look out of. Your view will either be the Mississippi River and the state of Illinois or a view of downtown St. Louis. Probably the coolest view is of Busch Stadium/Cardinals Stadium. I took my signature photo at the top next to the 630ft. Gateway Arch St. Louis sign.

There's plenty to do at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial including giant screen movie's, a documentary film "Monument of the Dream" and the Museum of Westward Expansion. I toured the museum and found a few Louisiana mentions that I couldn't pass up!

Now for lunch and then a nap before the #SoFresh Pre-Party!

St. Louis Is All Within Reach! Sunday PM

Touchdown in St. Louis!

After exiting the plane (Delta review coming soon!), I located the airport welcome center for the St. Louis Tourism Commission. As a fellow CVB affliate I always like to stop for their information first! (FYI, CVBs have the best info in a one-stop shop) During my visit, picked up a copy of their official Visitors Guide (we have one too) and began to ask a bunch of questions. My goal is to maximize one day of touring St. Louis. The Arch and Forest Park are high on the list. But the best piece of info, "instead of taking a $35 cab ride to the hotel, try the MetroLink!" Who would've thunk it! Transportation from the airport to the hotel for 10% of the cost to ride a cab. Not only is the fare cheap, but I'm getting a great view of the entire city on the ride into town.

More to come as I move into the city! Apparently, when I requested the card this particular account did not have a PIN# attached to it.

Now, I completely understand the concerns of a bank for consumer protection, but my goodness there was NO WAY for me to even access the information online.
